Second largest lake in Tyrol Plansee

In addition to numerous smaller mountain lakes, the Reutte Nature Park region is home to the second largest lake in Tyrol: the Plansee. The body of water is 6 km long and 76.5 meters deep at its deepest point. The Plansee belongs to the cleanest lakes in Tyrol with quality class I and therefore invites to different activities on and in the water.

Sailors, surfers, divers, but also anglers and swimmers get their money's worth. On particularly hot summer days or after an extended hike, a jump into the cool waters of the Plansee is a must. In an average summer it reaches a refreshing 17 to 21° C.

The Plansee as well as the Heiterwanger See is for the most part freely accessible for swimmers, there is only one area in which from May 1 to October 31 a parking management with parking machines is carried out. This area is located at the Hotel Forelle, camping / kiosk and sunbathing lawn as well as at the Musteralpe, where per car and day € 4, - to pay (parking and sunbathing lawn included - regardless of the number of people in the car). At the sunbathing lawn at the campsite Sennalpe invites a nice children's playground to swing and slide.

Boat trip

The Plansee is connected with the Heiterwanger See by a narrow channel. In summer, ships of the Plansee- and Heiterwanger See shipping company operate regularly on both waters. In the timetable you will find information about departure times, stops and prices.

At the Plansee, in addition to several refreshment stops and kiosks, the show dairy in the Musteralpe awaits you. Here, the craft of cheese-making can be observed through a pane of glass. In the summer, dairyman Horst Meusburger personally gives information about the art of cheese-making during a guided tour every Thursday as part of the Active Card program. Of course, you can also enjoy the cheese in various dishes or buy it packaged.

Hiking

But also away from the water sports there is a lot to experience in the vicinity of the Plansee, for example on various hiking trails.

For example, a moderately difficult circular hiking trail suitable for families leads to the idyllically situated Stuiben Falls or an easy walk to Lake Heiterwanger See.

Cycling & Mountain Bike

Those who prefer to explore nature on two wheels can take several tours from Plansee.

One mountain bike route leads from Plansee via Griesen to Garmisch and via Ehrwald/Lermoos and Reutte back to the starting point. Another mountain bike route, which is particularly popular with experienced bikers, runs via Neuwald-Kuhklause from Plansee to Urisee. On the way, you will pass a junction from which another bike trail leads to the Dürrenberg Alm.

Plansee also has great economic significance for the entire region: In 1921, Dr. Paul Schwarzkopf built a plant for the production of powder metallurgy products in Breitenwang. The decisive factor for the choice of location was the plant's energy supply from the hydropower of the Plansee.

Today, the Plansee Group is a global company and employs around 2000 people at the Breitenwang site.
